Why does carbon fiber crack before the fiberglass around it? 🤔

It's not a defect. It's physics.

Carbon fiber is five times stiffer than fiberglass, which means if you were to bond the two materials together and cause it to flex, the carbon fiber will absorb five times more stress than the fiberglass. However, carbon fiber is not five times STRONGER than fiberglass, so it reaches its failure point first.

Not because it's weak, but because it's so stiff that it can't share the load the way a matched material would.

That's just one of the things GBI Composite Materials Engineer Avery Jorgensen breaks down in this deep-dive on carbon fiber: what it actually is, why stiffness mismatch causes so many repeat failures, when you should and shouldn't use it in a repair, the difference between structural and cosmetic carbon fiber repairs, and a pro tip on wetting it out that most people get backwards.

If you've ever worked with carbon fiber (or wondered whether you should) this article is for you!

Decorative trim is beautiful right up until it starts rotting. 😅

The problem with scrollwork and detailed profiles is that all those curves and crevices are perfect at collecting water. Over time, that moisture adds up and rot sets in. But here's the thing: the detail work doesn't have to go.

In the full-length video on YouTube, we show how to restore this rotted decorative trim profile back to its original shape using WEST SYSTEM Wood Rot Repair Epoxy. With some basic prep and a fill coat mixed with 407 Low-Density Filler, you can sculpt the damaged area back to match the surrounding detail.

No replacement piece. No custom millwork order. Just a solid repair done in place.
