Good epoxy bonds rely on mechanical adhesion, and that starts with proper surface prep.
Here’s the approach Don used before fiberglassing this stringer: 👇
🔹 Hand-sand with 80-grit sandpaper to dull the surface and remove high spots
🔹 Hand sanding generates less heat than an orbital sander or grinder (it also reduces the risk of sanding dust getting packed into the surface—both of which can compromise adhesion)
🔹 Hit the surface with a nylon abrasive wheel to abrade the surface and remove low spots
🔹 Vacuum the surface clean to remove all debris

Release fabric is a simple tool that saves time. ⏱️
Using release fabric (aka "peel ply") minimizes surface prep and helps ensure a strong bond when you move on to the next fiberglass step.
What’s happening here:
✔️ Tracer lines show where the fabric is still in place
✔️ Peel it off after cure to reveal a textured surface
✔️ That texture gives epoxy something to bite into
✔️ Knock down high spots with 80-grit if needed
